To start, the graphics on both systems are excellent. As far as quantity of games available, the nod goes to the Xbox 360. With the advent of motion controller add-ons like the Xbox Kinect and Playstation Eye, both companies have stayed at the forefront of technology. Here, they're tied. Many of the differences could be chalked up to preference. For instance, the argument could be made that the 360 is more of the quintessential gaming machine, with its larger library of games and more substantial online components. Just as easily to gab about would be the PS3 as the all-in-one media device we always hear it being labeled, with its excellent blu-ray player and 7.1 home theater connectivity.
But I think it helps to know the subjective personal experiences along with the objective facts and figures. I’ve owned both. The 360 lasted all of one-and-a-half years, a fact that makes me shudder thinking about the $400 I dropped on an Elite version on Halloween Day 2007 at a local Best Buy. As well, I spent hundreds more on new and used games, and monthly membership subscriptions to the Xbox Gold online service.
The PS3 was purchased in Spring 2009. It has lasted two years without a single problem or hitch in hardware or advertised gaming abilities. Online subscription comes free, and with the exception of the recent month-long service blackout it has been great.
Literally (luckily) the only thing I miss about the mostly-dreadful Microsoft system was playing endless hours of Halo 3 online with friends. Playstation does not offer the Halo franchise, but the one-two combination of excellent games and a quality gaming system leaves me little to be disappointed about.
Playing a blu-ray of Heat , a 1995 cops-n-robbers flick that starred Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Val Kilmer, on the Playstation is, simply put, amazing. The PS3 has no problem with the 1080p video output, and its got its own 7.1 surround sound processor. just hook it up to two, five, or seven speakers and go.
I could not be happier with the decision of getting the bulletproof PS3 over yet another shaky Xbox.

All your points are valid, but your experience isn't going to be everyone's. I got the cheapest X-Box available brand new for $150. Didn't come with all the frills, but it lets me play games. I've had it for two years with no problems. I bought a used HD at Gamestop for $30. Again, no problems. I spent the money I saved on games. I've bought around 30 games, most of them used, and all of them cheaper than any games on PS3. I've rented probably 30-40 more. I currently have both the PS3 and 360. The PS3 is hands down a better media system and DVD player. Even when it comes to little things like playing slightly scratched discs. But that's not why I bought a game console. I bought it to play games. And the X-Box has more games for lower prices. I also enjoy the X-Box online experience a lot more, because it's more of a gaming community. I think the 360 controller is a lot better for most games than the PS3, which for me is the biggest reason to pick a system: what you like to play with. The controller may be a matter of opinion, but that's the main reason I would choose a 360 if I could have only one. Another reason is certain games I love that are not on PS3: Halo, Mass Effect, Fable. Though PS does have Infamous which I love. I also love Sony making old school PS1 games available to download. That's awesome. But a lot of those games are also on X-Box Live, and more will be. PS3 has an internet browser, and 360 doesn't. But it's not a very good one. I couldn't watch episodes of Smackdown on WWE.com, or play Facebook games, or lots of other things I like to do online. I could watch videos at Marvel.com though, which was cool, I guess it depends on if the particular site can interact with Sony's OS. But again, that's not why I bought a console. I do watch Netflix, MSNBC, ESPN, and Youtube on my X-Box now.
So, to sum up, they both have their ups and downs, but it all comes down to personal choice. Your experience and mine of the exact same thing will be completely different, because we're different people.
